We talk a lot about healing.
Healing your body, your mind, your relationships, your nervous system.
But here’s the hard truth: you can’t truly heal if your body is living in constant stress.
Stress has to be managed first. Otherwise, all the work you’re doing to “get better” will feel like running in circles.
Let’s break down why stress management comes before real healing.
Why is it so important to notice when you’re stressed?
You might be wondering why this even matters.
Maybe you feel like you’re pretty good at handling stress.
Or maybe you’ve just gotten used to ignoring it and pushing through.
But let me ask you this:
If you’re nodding along, your body is trying to tell you something. Stress doesn’t always shout, it often whispers through symptoms we dismiss as “normal.”
Your body is talking to you all the time. The question is: are you willing to listen?
Because when rest never feels like enough, when peace feels out of reach, it’s usually a sign that your body is holding on to stress and operating on high alert.
That’s why noticing stressors is so important.
It’s the very first step toward regulating your nervous system and creating space for true healing.
Now, let’s get to it:
To your body it’s all the same: STRESS.
Whether it’s spilling your coffee or going through a major life change, your nervous system reacts the same way: danger, danger, danger. It doesn’t separate “this is minor” from “this is huge.” It just knows your body feels under threat and responds with stress hormones. That’s why even small daily stressors can add up and leave you feeling like you’re drowning.
2. Stress hijacks your brain’s capacity to heal.
If you’re on a healing journey and you are/have tried journaling, affirmations, etc. and it’s not sinking in, then it may not be. You’re not going crazy. Chronic stress slows down other body systems which causes many side effects: including brain fog and memory issues. This can greatly impact healing. If your mind is clouded and having trouble organizing thoughts due to stress, then understanding healing processes just won’t happen. At least, not to their full effect. For lasting happiness & self-regulation, then managing stress is key.
When you’re stuck in stress, your brain doesn’t have space for anything else. The part of your brain responsible for healing, learning, and problem-solving can’t function properly when your nervous system is constantly screaming “we’re not safe.” In other words, your brain literally cannot hold stress and healing at the same time.
3. Stress traps you in fight-or-flight mode.
This means your body is not relaxed and your stress hormones (cortisol being one) are elevated. It also means that your other bodily systems (including your digestive and immune systems, amongst others) are suppressed and not working at an optimal level. Your whole nervous system is out of whack. Constantly getting sick and/or having gut issues? Stress is likely the culprit.
Fight or flight is meant to be temporary. But when stress becomes chronic, your body forgets how to return to baseline. You live with racing thoughts, tight muscles, shallow breathing, and exhaustion because your body thinks it’s preparing for battle 24/7. Healing doesn’t happen in fight-or-flight, it only happens when your body feels safe enough to rest.
4. Chronic stress increases your risk of illness.
Here’s the kicker: stress doesn’t just make you feel frazzled, it changes your health long-term. Chronic stress weakens your immune system, increases inflammation, and puts you at a higher risk for disease. Over time, stress can manifest as headaches, gut issues, hormone imbalances, and even serious illnesses. Healing isn’t just about “feeling better.” It’s about protecting your future health, too.
So, what can you do about it?
The first step isn’t a fancy healing practice or a big life overhaul, it’s simply acknowledging that you’re stressed. This is the biggest challenge for most of us, because we’re so used to pushing through.
Here are a few steps to move forward:
Slow down & enjoy your life. Because the point of all this isn’t just “managing stress.” It’s creating a life where peace is your normal.
Acknowledge that you’re stressed. Give yourself permission to name it.
Notice where your body holds stress. Tension in your jaw? Shoulders? Stomach? Awareness is everything.
Find techniques that work for you. Breathing, journaling, gentle movement, prayer, or grounding outside. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s routine.
Limit what you can. Set boundaries, say no, and simplify where possible.
Learn to self-regulate. When stress hits, have tools you can reach for immediately to bring yourself back to calm.
Easier said than done, I know. It’s a simple process but not an easy one.
Unresolved stress could be the reason you feel clouded, stuck in the past, depressed, anxious, or whatever it is that’s at the forefront of your life.
Healing starts with stress management. Slow down, breathe, and give your body the safety it need so the real healing can finally begin.
Stressors will always be around, but if you learn how to effectively manage them then you create more space in your life for the good things.
You create space for healing.
You create space for loving (yourself & others).
You create space for happiness to enter your life.
Don’t let stress hold you back.
Create the life you want for yourself.
